The Department of Infectious Diseases and Pulmonary Medicine of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin has a weaning centre at the Charité Mitte campus (CCM) that specialises in weaning from ventilation.
You are here:
Certified Weaning Center
The Weaning Center is certified by the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP).
This means that the structures and processes of the center are regularly reviewed to ensure optimal therapy quality.
At the clinic's Weaning Centre, differentiated, non-invasive and invasive ventilation therapies are carried out and patients are weaned from mechanical ventilation and led back to independent breathing ("weaning").
The duration and success of weaning varies depending on the individual conditions of the patient, age, type of disease, previous illnesses, etc.:
While in patients with simple conditions weaning is successful at the first attempt, in patients with difficult conditions up to three spontaneous breathing attempts must be made until they are successfully weaned.
With the so-called "prolonged weaning", more spontaneous breathing attempts and correspondingly more ventilation days are required.
In addition, there are also a few patients who do not succeed in weaning. The Charité Centre for Outpatient Ventilation and Oxygen Therapy (CABS) is then available to the latter to organise outpatient ventilation
